そこで、光ファイバー技術の成熟から、1973年に津志田と菅原によって軟性膀胱鏡が発明された。軟性膀胱鏡は直径が小さく（ストロー大）、尿道解剖学的形状に沿った湾曲が可能であるため不快感が少なく、尿道鎮痛ジェルによる局所麻酔で覚醒している患者さんへのアクセスも非常に困難であった。
