Diet is one of the subjects my patients most enjoy discussing — partly because, unlike age and family history, it is something they can actually act on. Here is an updated look at the evidence, sorted honestly by how strong that evidence actually is.
One thing to set expectations first. Almost all of this evidence comes from observational studies — they show that populations eating certain foods develop less prostate cancer, which is not the same as proving the food is the reason. Diet shifts the odds modestly; it does not confer immunity, and it is not a substitute for PSA screening and a urology review at the appropriate age. Eat well by all means — but do not let a good diet talk you out of getting checked.
Strongest evidence

- Tomatoes — lycopene, the antioxidant that gives tomatoes their colour, is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, with a dose-related effect reported from around 2 mg daily taken consistently. The proposed mechanism is that lycopene reduces the expression of genes involved in testosterone metabolism, and testosterone is central to how prostate cancer behaves. Worth knowing: lycopene is absorbed better from cooked and processed tomatoes than from raw ones, so tomato sauce is not the inferior option here.
- ชาเขียว — catechins, the antioxidants concentrated in green tea, show inhibitory effects on cancer progression. The most-cited work comes from Japan, where green tea consumption is among the highest in the world, and suggests that five or more cups a day is associated with lower prostate cancer risk.
Strongest here is a relative term, and it is worth being precise about what it means. Even for tomatoes and green tea, the evidence is consistent observational data plus a plausible laboratory mechanism — not randomised trials showing that adding either one to your diet lowers your own risk. It is enough to justify a sensible eating pattern. It is not enough to treat any food as treatment.

Promising, but not established
- Fish and vegetable oils — unsaturated fatty acids may help reduce risk, though the evidence is thinner. What is better established is the other side of the coin: a high-fat diet is linked to several cancers including prostate cancer, and animal studies show high-fat feeding significantly increases tumour size. So the safer conclusion is less about adding fish oil and more about displacing saturated fat.
- Legumes and soy — isoflavones are abundant in legumes and structurally resemble oestrogen, so they can bind oestrogen receptors in prostate tissue and may inhibit cancer cell growth. The mechanism is plausible and the population data are encouraging, but this has not been proven in humans.

Still uncertain
- The “prudent” dietary pattern — broadly, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, fish and legumes. Whether the pattern as a whole protects against prostate cancer remains unsettled. What the data do show reasonably clearly is the reverse: high consumption of red meat, processed meat, potatoes and high-fat dairy is associated with increased prostate cancer risk.

If you take one practical message from all this, let it be that the evidence for avoiding certain foods is stronger and more consistent than the evidence for any single protective food. Cutting back on red and processed meat and high-fat dairy is a better-supported move than loading up on any one superfood — and it is worth doing alongside screening, not instead of it.
One more caution, aimed at anyone already diagnosed. Nothing on this page is a treatment for prostate cancer. Diet is discussed here as a question of risk in men who do not have the disease; if you have been diagnosed, no food or supplement substitutes for the treatment plan agreed with your urologist and oncologist, and choices such as high-dose supplements should be raised with them before you start.

Certain dietary choices are associated with prostate cancer risk. Tomatoes (rich in lycopene) and green tea (rich in catechin) have the strongest supporting evidence, while fish, vegetable oils and legumes show promising but less conclusive results. Most of this evidence is observational, so diet shifts the odds rather than guaranteeing protection, and it does not replace PSA screening.
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant associated with reduced prostate cancer risk. Lycopene is thought to work by reducing the expression of genes involved in testosterone metabolism, which plays a key role in prostate cancer development. Regular consumption of around 2 mg per day is the dose most often cited, and lycopene is absorbed better from cooked tomatoes than raw.
Green tea contains catechins, antioxidants with inhibitory effects on cancer cell progression. Studies from Japan, where green tea consumption is among the highest in the world, suggest that drinking five or more cups daily is associated with a measurable reduction in prostate cancer risk. This is an association observed in populations rather than proof that adding green tea will lower an individual’s risk.
Yes. High-fat diets, particularly those rich in red meat, processed meat, and high-fat dairy products, are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Animal studies have shown that high-fat diets significantly promote cancer growth, and this pattern is consistent with findings in human population studies. The evidence for avoiding these foods is stronger than the evidence for any single protective food.

No. Diet modestly shifts risk in populations; it does not detect a cancer that is already present. Early prostate cancer causes no symptoms, so screening at the appropriate age – earlier where there is a family history – remains the only way to find it while it is still confined to the prostate. Eating well and being screened are complementary, not alternatives.
