Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy Rate and Conception Timing

What is the highest chance of getting pregnant per menstrual cycle?

According to clinical studies, the highest chance of pregnancy is over 40% when intercourse occurs one day before ovulation. The second best timing is two days before ovulation, which gives over a 30% chance. The probability drops significantly on the day of ovulation itself, and falls to near zero the day after ovulation. Sex position does not affect pregnancy rate.

What can couples do to improve their chances of conception?

Several practical steps can help improve conception chances: elevating the woman’s hips by at least 10 cm after ejaculation allows gravity to assist sperm movement toward the cervix; avoiding hot baths before intercourse protects sperm from heat damage; avoiding vaginal douching preserves the natural acidic environment and fertility-friendly cervical mucus; and using only sperm-friendly lubricants, as standard lubricants can impair sperm motility.

Is pregnancy rate the same as live birth rate?

No. Pregnancy rate refers to the chance of obtaining a positive pregnancy test per ovulation cycle, while live birth rate refers to the chance of delivering a surviving baby. Live birth rate is significantly lower than pregnancy rate because various complications can occur during the 40-week pregnancy period. Couples should discuss both figures with their urologist or reproductive specialist when planning for a family.
