Frequently Asked Questions About Uric Acid Kidney Stone

Can uric acid kidney stones be dissolved with oral medication?

Yes — uric acid kidney stone is the only type of kidney stone that can be effectively treated with oral medication. The primary approach is urine alkalinization using potassium citrate therapy, which aims to bring urine pH to a neutral range of 6.5–7.0. At this pH, the uric acid crystal structure dissolves. Anti-gout medications may also be used since gout and uric acid stones share the same metabolic pathway.

How do I know if my kidney stone is uric acid type?

Provisional diagnosis is made by finding acidic urine pH on urine examination, and by noting low stone density on CT scan. Definitive diagnosis requires stone analysis — the actual stone must be collected (passed spontaneously or retrieved surgically) and sent to a specialized laboratory. Without stone analysis, there is only a 10% chance your kidney stone is uric acid type, since 90% of kidney stones are calcium-containing and cannot be dissolved with oral medication.

What diet changes help with uric acid kidney stones?

Diet plays an important role alongside medication. Recommended changes include: increasing intake of fruits and vegetables (especially citrus juices like orange juice and lemonade which naturally alkalinize urine), reducing animal protein consumption which raises uric acid levels, and drinking at least 2,500 mL of fluid daily to dilute urine concentration. If oral therapy fails, surgical options such as ESWL or endoscopic laser surgery are available.
