Vasectomy is a permanent male contraceptive day-care procedure taking approximately 1 hour. Successful outcome depends not only on the surgical technique but equally on correct postoperative management. This article covers everything you need to know about caring for yourself after vasectomy.

输精管切除术 Postoperative Instructions
- Week 1 after surgery:
- Sedentary (desk-based) activities only
- Avoid heavy exercise (jogging, cycling, marathon) — risk of dislodging the ligation material
- 没有性活动

- After week 1:
- Heavy exercise is permitted
- Sexual activity is permitted — but another contraceptive method must still be used until vasectomy success is confirmed by semen analysis

Confirming successful vasectomy
After surgery, a pathological report will confirm that both vas deferens were correctly ligated. However, residual spermatozoa still exist near the cut site immediately after vasectomy and can still cause pregnancy. Semen analysis is performed when one of these two conditions is met:
- 3 months after the operation
- 20 ejaculations after the operation
Once the semen analysis confirms zero spermatozoa (azoospermia), vasectomy is confirmed as successful and contraceptive-free sexual activity is permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions About Post-Vasectomy Care
When can I resume exercise and sexual activity after vasectomy?
During the first week after vasectomy, only sedentary (desk-based) activities are permitted. Heavy exercise such as jogging, cycling, or marathon running must be avoided to prevent the ligation material from slipping. Sexual activity is also not permitted in week 1. From week 2 onwards, both heavy exercise and sexual activity are permitted — but another contraceptive method must continue to be used until vasectomy success is confirmed by semen analysis.
How do I know if my vasectomy was successful?
Vasectomy success is confirmed by semen analysis showing zero spermatozoa (azoospermia). This test is performed when either 3 months have passed since surgery or 20 ejaculations have occurred — whichever comes first. A pathological report after surgery also confirms that both vas deferens were correctly ligated. Until semen analysis confirms azoospermia, another contraceptive method must be used during sexual activity, as residual sperm near the cut site can still cause pregnancy.
Is vasectomy a permanent procedure?
Yes. Vasectomy is a permanent male contraceptive procedure that surgically interrupts the vas deferens — the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. While vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) is technically possible, it is not guaranteed to restore fertility and should not be relied upon. Vasectomy should be considered permanent and is suitable for men who have completed their family or who do not wish to father children. The procedure itself takes approximately 1 hour as a day-care operation and has a very high success rate when performed correctly and confirmed by semen analysis.
