They are transmitted through vaginal, oral and rectal contact. In men, urethral discharge and pain on passing urine typically appear <strong>3\u201314 days<\/strong> after exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the test changed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing used to mean a urethral swab \u2014 a cotton tip inserted about 4 cm into the urethra, uncomfortable enough that it discouraged plenty of men from being tested at all, and only around 50% accurate depending on who took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today the standard is <strong>NAAT<\/strong> (nucleic acid amplification testing) using <strong>PCR<\/strong>, which finds the organism&#8217;s genetic material in a simple morning urine sample and reaches <strong>up to 98% accuracy<\/strong>. No instrument goes anywhere near the urethra. If the swab is what has been putting you off, that obstacle no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" panel is not the same thing as &#8220;a full STD check&#8221;. <strong>The panel above does not detect HIV, syphilis, genital herpes or HPV.<\/strong> Those need separate testing \u2014 blood tests for <a href=\"https:\/\/drsoaraweeurology.com\/th\/2021\/10\/08\/%e0%b8%8b%e0%b8%b4%e0%b8%9f%e0%b8%b4%e0%b8%a5%e0%b8%b4%e0%b8%aa-%e0%b8%a7%e0%b8%b4%e0%b8%98%e0%b8%b5%e0%b8%97%e0%b8%b5%e0%b9%88%e0%b8%96%e0%b8%b9%e0%b8%81%e0%b8%95%e0%b9%89%e0%b8%ad%e0%b8%87-%e0%b8%81\/\">\u0e0b\u0e34\u0e1f\u0e34\u0e25\u0e34\u0e2a<\/a> and HIV, and clinical assessment for herpes and warts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear urine PCR result after a high-risk encounter is genuinely reassuring about seven infections. It is not a clean bill of health, and treating it as one is the mistake I most want to prevent. Decide what to test for with a doctor, based on what actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to take the test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timing changes the result. Testing too soon after exposure can give a negative even when infection is present, because there is not yet enough genetic material to detect \u2014 the window period. For chlamydia and gonorrhoea, testing is generally reliable from about <strong>1\u20132 weeks<\/strong> after exposure; the blood-borne infections above have their own, longer windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two practical points: hold your urine for <strong>at least an hour<\/strong> before giving the sample, since freshly flushed urine dilutes what the test is looking for; and if you have symptoms now, do not wait for a window period to pass before being seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The good news, stated accurately<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All seven infections on this panel are bacterial or parasitic, and all of them are curable with the right antibiotic.<\/strong> That is a genuinely encouraging thing to be able to say. It applies to this panel \u2014 HIV, herpes and HPV are managed rather than cured, which is another reason to know which test you have had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two things make the difference between treatment working and the same infection returning a month later: <strong>finishing the full course<\/strong>, and <strong>your partner being treated at the same time<\/strong>. Reinfection from an untreated partner is the commonest reason a cured infection reappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
