If you have a urological question now, ask a urologist now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">By this point everyone had heard of COVID-19, or SARS-CoV-2 \u2014 the novel respiratory infection first identified in Wuhan, China. A great many patients were asking me the same question: does this virus affect the urinary tract? Here is what the evidence looked like as of <strong>29 April 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can the virus attack the urinary tract?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. SARS-CoV-2 enters cells through the ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) receptor, which is found not only in the lung and heart but also in the oesophagus, ileum, urinary bladder and kidney \u2014 so the urinary tract is a potential target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if the urinary tract is affected?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can cause acute kidney injury, ranging from mild to severe, with protein or blood detectable in the urine.
