Usually small and short-lived.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soreness and a dull ache<\/strong> low down or in the perineum for a few days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stinging on passing urine and going more often<\/strong> for a day or two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feeling faint or sweaty during or just after the procedure.<\/strong> A common vasovagal reaction, not a complication, and it passes with lying down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On the percentages that used to be listed here<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article previously carried a detailed table of complication rates to one decimal place, including separate entries for <em>persistent painful urination<\/em> and <em>pain or burning on urination<\/em>, which describe the same thing at rates that contradicted each other, and an entry for <strong>heart attack at 0.3%<\/strong>. That last figure reflects what happens to a large group of older men over the following weeks; it is not a complication of the biopsy, and listing it as one was misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The precision was also false \u2014 figures like this vary widely between series and by technique. What a man actually needs is not a decimal place but the shape of it: <strong>bleeding is common and expected, serious infection is uncommon but real and is the thing to act on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms that need attention the same day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fever or shaking chills.<\/strong> The most important one, at any point in the first week or two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling faint, confused or profoundly unwell, particularly with a fever.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being unable to pass urine<\/strong> with a painful full bladder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heavy bleeding or clots<\/strong> \u2014 as opposed to lightly stained urine \u2014 or bleeding from the back passage that does not stop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain that is increasing after the first couple of days rather than settling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burning and frequency getting worse rather than better after two or three days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything else \u2014 including how soon to return to work, exercise, sex or a blood-thinning medicine, and when your result will be ready \u2014 should come from the team who performed your biopsy, since it depends on how many samples were taken and what else you are being treated for. No amount of rectal preparation removes that, and antibiotic prophylaxis before the procedure reduces it without abolishing it \u2014 increasingly so, as resistant organisms become commoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An earlier version of this article described transrectal biopsy as <em>the gold standard<\/em>. <strong>That is no longer accurate and has been corrected.<\/strong> Practice has moved towards the <strong>transperineal route<\/strong>, in which the needle passes through the skin instead, avoiding the rectum entirely and making serious infection much less likely.
