Diet shifts the odds modestly; it does not confer immunity, and it is not a substitute for PSA screening and a urology review at the appropriate age. Eat well by all means — but do not let a good diet talk you out of getting checked.

Strongest evidence

Lycopene, abundant in tomatoes, has the strongest supporting evidence of any dietary factor here.

Tomatoes — lycopene, the antioxidant that gives tomatoes their colour, is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, with a dose-related effect reported from around 2 mg daily taken consistently. Tomatoes (rich in lycopene) and green tea (rich in catechin) have the strongest supporting evidence, while fish, vegetable oils and legumes show promising but less conclusive results. Most of this evidence is observational, so diet shifts the odds rather than guaranteeing protection, and it does not replace PSA screening.

Why is tomato considered protective against prostate cancer?
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant associated with reduced prostate cancer risk. Lycopene is thought to work by reducing the expression of genes involved in testosterone metabolism, which plays a key role in prostate cancer development. Regular consumption of around 2 mg per day is the dose most often cited, and lycopene is absorbed better from cooked tomatoes than raw.

How does green tea help protect against prostate cancer?
Green tea contains catechins, antioxidants with inhibitory effects on cancer cell progression. Studies from Japan, where green tea consumption is among the highest in the world, suggest that drinking five or more cups daily is associated with a measurable reduction in prostate cancer risk. This is an association observed in populations rather than proof that adding green tea will lower an individual’s risk.

Are there foods that increase the risk of prostate cancer?
Yes. High-fat diets, particularly those rich in red meat, processed meat, and high-fat dairy products, are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Animal studies have shown that high-fat diets significantly promote cancer growth, and this pattern is consistent with findings in human population studies. The evidence for avoiding these foods is stronger than the evidence for any single protective food.

Should I take lycopene or green tea supplements for prostate cancer prevention?
The current evidence supports obtaining these nutrients from natural food sources rather than supplements, as the full protective mechanism may depend on other compounds present in whole foods. Before starting any supplement, it is advisable to consult your urologist, who can provide personalized guidance based on your individual risk profile.

Can diet replace PSA screening?
No. Diet modestly shifts risk in populations; it does not detect a cancer that is already present. Early prostate cancer causes no symptoms, so screening at the appropriate age – earlier where there is a family history – remains the only way to find it while it is still confined to the prostate. Eating well and being screened are complementary, not alternatives.

Disclaimer: This content is written and reviewed by Dr. Soarawee Weerasopone, a board-certified urologist at Bangkok Hospital Headquarters.
